Travelers checking bags despite fees

According to the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics, passenger airlines collected $797 million in baggage fees, or 1.6 percent of total operating revenue in 2013.

CHICAGO – Despite increased fees and stricter size restrictions, travelers are still checking their bags at roughly the same rate as last year. This was the finding from surveys conducted by The GO Group, LLC, an international  ground transportation service provider and GO Airport Express, a GO member and Chicago-based ground transportation company serving O’Hare International and Midway airports.

More than 917 travelers were polled in this year’s survey on luggage preferences. In 2014, 32 percent of respondents said they prefer to check their luggage; 21 percent said they prefer to carry on and 26 percent said they both check and carry on.

Twenty seven percent noted that whether they check or carry on depends on the situation, such as the length of their trip and the number of bags they were toting.

This compares with a 2013 poll of 570 travelers, where 28 percent said they checked their bags. Nineteen percent said they always carry on; 23 percent said they did both and 30 percent cited that it depended on the situation.

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, passenger airlines collected $797 million in baggage fees, or 1.6 percent of total operating revenue in 2013.

“Savvy travelers should research baggage and other fees on airlines’ web pages to determine what works for them for each trip,” says John McCarthy, president, GO Airport Express. “We hope our economical airport shuttle services help offset some of those costs.”

GO Airport Express provides airport shuttles to and from O’Hare International and Midway Airports.

One of the oldest companies in Chicago, GO Airport Express traces its founding to 1853 and the Parmelee Transportation Company, which provided a carriage service between Chicago’s railroad stations and the downtown hotels. The GO Group, LLC is a one-stop source for door-to-door airport shuttle services. Its members transport some 13 million passengers to and from some 66 airports in the United States, Mexico, Canada and Europe annually.

Also, GO Airport Express has added free WiFi to all its shared-ride airport shuttles. Free WiFi also is available on the company’s shuttles between Fashion Outlets of Chicago in Rosemont, downtown hotels and North Bridge Shopping Center on Michigan Ave. as well as Rivers Casino in Des Plaines. Riders can access the service using a code provided by their driver.

“Offering free WiFi is our way of making riding with us more enjoyable and productive,” says John McCarthy. “We’ve gotten lots of positive feedback from our passengers.”
