U.S. increasingly popular destination for Europeans, as prices drop

San Francisco nabs the spot as the world's second most popular place to visit next year for European travelers.

Europe’s OTA eDreams ODIGEO reveals trending destinations for 2018. United States jumps to second most popular country for European travelers, from ninth place in 2016.

MIAMI – The United States has jumped up to the second most popular country for European travelers to visit in 2018, from ninth place last year, according to new data from the 2017 'European Traveler Insights Report'.

eDreams ODIGEO, Europe's largest online travel company whose brands include popular travel booking website edreams.net and the metasearch engine liligo.com, has released the report based on the company's extensive flight passenger data to share insight into traveler trends.

Predictions for holiday hot spots in 2018
The U.S. is ranked the second most popular country to visit in 2018 by European travelers, up from ninth spot the year prior. The French, Germans, Brits, Spanish and Italians make up the top five nations planning to visit the U.S. in 2018.

Four U.S. cities make the list of Top 25 Most Trending Travel Destinations for Europeans in 2018. San Francisco (flight passenger arrivals up 158%) nabs the spot as the world's second most popular place to visit next year for European travelers, based on bookings made so far in 2017 for 2018. Miami (up 99%) comes in at 13th place, followed by Los Angeles (up 93%) in 14th place and New York (up 76%) in 22nd place.

New low-cost flight options driving down the price of flights to and from the U.S.
It appears this jump in demand could be due to the price of flights between Europe and several U.S. cities dropping between 2016 and 2017. Prices between Europe and San Francisco are down by 19%, Los Angeles by 17%, Miami by 12% and New York by 11%. Since 2012, 15 long-haul, low-cost airlines have launched[1] around the world, providing stiff price competition to more established long-haul carriers, and driving prices down across the board.

U.S. travelers choosing to fly to U.S. cities, as Las Vegas tops list as most popular destination for 2017
Looking at 2017 so far, Las Vegas tops the list as most popular city for Americans to visit for a second year in a row, based on flight passenger volume. Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Los Angeles come next in the list, with London – the only European city in the top 10 destinations – securing spot number five.

Meanwhile, 2018 booking patterns for American travelers so far reveal that the U.S. tops the list as the most popular country, followed by Mexico, The United Kingdom and France.
