With airline ticket sales commissions disappearing, plus growing consolidation and on-line booking, many travel agents are disappearing as an individual breed. It has been estimated that as many as two thousand have disappeared within the USA over the last two year period.
More and more of the surviving agencies are concentrating on specific market targets. These include group sales for tour operators, who pay full commissions on a complete package including air travel.
Many are `creating` group travel, by soliciting associations and companies of all sorts. Some agents report that once a group is formed, they take tours on a somewhat regular basis, and seek professional advice on their planned trips. One parallel field is that of senior citizens, who reportedly make at least two foreign trips a year.
