Harvard seminar with WTO participation studies labour markets in tourism

Tourism academics and professionals associated with Harvard University, as well as the WTO Department of Human Resource Development, took part in a seminar on The Influence of Tourism on Labour Markets and Development: A Global Perspective held at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on 21 and 22 November. The seminar was organized by the Research Group on Tourism Economics (Prof. Julio Tascon, Dept. of Economics) of the University of Oviedo jointly with the Royal Complutense Institute at Harvard.



Presentations and discussion topics included evaluation of the impacts of tourism on labour markets, the evolution of salaries in the tourism industry and re-inventing social contracts to enhance competitiveness in tourism.



Specific cases were also considered, such as:


  • The impact of tourism on indigenous peoples. A study of labour markets in New Zealand;

  • The economic impact of tourism in South Korea under authoritarian regulations;

  • Fostering tourism as a means of development: the case of Peru;

  • The evolution of wages in tourism in Spain;

  • Tourism labour markets in the Caribbean Region.


The future plan of work set at the seminar envisages the establishment of an experts network in this area, conferences and working meetings and the publication of studies in coordination with the WTO Education Council and the WTO.Tourism Labour Market Observatory programme. A second conference at Harvard is planned during the autumn of 2004.
