New Mexico`s most successful single effort to clean up New Mexico`s highways, byways and communities returns to center stage September 14-19, 2005 with the annual Trek for Trash.

This event brings communities together from every corner of New Mexico to clean up our state, said Governor Bill Richardson in announcing his support for the statewide fall cleanup, Trek for Trash.

Governor Richardson has once again asked former Governor Gary Johnson to lead the Clean Team of cyclists during Trek for Trash. The effort is led by a core group of bicyclists, staff and volunteers who travel the highways of the state picking up trash. Bicyclists travel more than 500 miles during the event, picking up litter from highways and communities, in an effort to promote litter awareness – not only in the communities they travel through but to citizens statewide.

The Trek for Trash event begins Wednesday (September 14, 2005) in Farmington and takes the cyclists through Chama, Taos, Mora, Las Vegas, Pecos, Santa Fe and Los Alamos before wrapping things up in Rio Rancho Monday (September 19, 2005).

Most communities will be participating Saturday (September 17, 2005) – the official designated date. Check with your local organizations for specific times and dates or call New Mexico Clean & Beautiful at 1-800-Toss No Mas (1-800-867-7666) to volunteer, said Joe Lobato, executive director of New Mexico Clean & Beautiful, a program of the New Mexico Tourism Department.

NMTD Secretary Michael Cerletti said Trek for Trash is incredible, bringing together riders and volunteers from all over the state and the country in the statewide cleanup. New Mexico is an incredibly beautiful state. These folks are determined to keep it that way and they are to be commended for their civic involvement.

Trek for Trash is sponsored by Sonic Drive-Ins, Camino Real Environmental, El Paso Corporation, Sandia Ski Peak and Ski Santa Fe, Keep New Mexico Beautiful, Inc. and SWANA (Solid Waste Association of Northern America – Roadrunner Chapter).

New Mexico Clean & Beautiful is also affiliated with the national non-profit organization Keep America Beautiful, Inc., created by the Litter Control and Beautification Act of 1985 and is charged with coordinating statewide litter control and beautification efforts.
