“What if the traveling public actually called the Presidential race?” Just-released survey reveals voting intentions of American travelers.
KANSAS CITY – With political pundits tracking how voters will cast their ballots this November, a new national survey asked, “What if the traveling public actually called the Presidential race?” The answer to this and other election-season questions is revealed a new survey of 2.232 active travelers conducted this August by marketing services firm MMGY Global.
Among all active U.S. travelers, 37% are registered Republicans, 35% are registered Democrats, and 23% are independents. If their stated intentions come to fruition by popular vote this coming Election Day, GOP candidate Mitt Romney will soon occupy the White House:
Mitt Romney (49%) / Barack Obama (42%) / Third Party Candidate (8%)
Regional differences boost President Obama’s chances for a second term, however – he is favored to win by nearly half of active travelers (48%) in both the West and Midwest, two regions that are home to states with powerhouse electoral votes. Romney’s fans make up the majority of vacationers who reside in the South (58%) and Northeast (47%), regions that also include states with significant electoral weight.
Beyond the Presidential race, the survey also revealed that the expiration of the Bush-era tax cuts would have an adverse effect on the future vacation plans of active travelers. Although four out of ten (38%) said the expiration of these tax cuts would have no effect on their future travel behavior, the majority (54%) stated otherwise – 32% stated they would “take substantially fewer leisure trips,” and 22% would “take somewhat fewer leisure trips.”
