The Hotel Association of Canada (HAC) today released the results of a national survey indicating that six out of ten Canadians are looking for environmentally friendly hotels as an important part of their travel plans.

Last month GPC Public Affairs conducted a national survey for the HAC asking 1,200 Canadians how important it is to them, when making travel plans, that hotels, motels and resorts offer environmental programs, such as energy conservation, that benefit both the environment and the community.

Sixty per cent of respondents claim this is an important factor when it comes to selecting lodgings. By region, the breakdown of this figure is as follows: Atlantic Provinces – 65%; Quebec – 72%; Ontario – 56%; Manitoba and Saskatchewan – 52%; Alberta – 55%; and in British Columbia – 50%.

The results show that the greening of hotels across Canada is becoming more significant than ever, said Tony Pollard, HAC President, and demonstrates why Canadian travellers should look for hotels certified under the Hotel Association of Canada`s Green Key Eco-Rating Program.

The HAC Green Key Eco-Rating Program is a graduated rating system designed to recognize hotels, motels and resorts that are committed to improving their environmental performance. Based on the results of a comprehensive environmental audit, hoteliers are awarded a one to five Green Key rating. Designed by hoteliers for hoteliers, the belief behind the program is simple; environmental leadership and responsibility makes business sense.
