VisitBritain and UKinbound hold tourism roadhsow in Colombia

The event follows Avianca’s launch of a new flight between Bogota and London Heathrow in July earlier this year.

From 29 September until 2 October a delegation of UK tourism suppliers will join VisitBritain and UKinbound for a multi-city tourism roadshow in Colombia to promote Britain as a key travel destination.

The event follows Avianca’s launch of a new flight between Bogota and London Heathrow in July earlier this year. Bogota is a key transport hub in Latin America and Avianca estimates that traffic will increase by 300% as a direct result of the new route.

The roadshow, supported by Avianca airlines and the UK Embassy in Bogota, will see the UK suppliers accompanied by Deirdre Wells, CEO of UKinbound, and Emily Moore, Nurture Markets Project Manager at VisitBritain. The Embassy will host a ‘Tourism is GREAT’ reception to open the roadshow, which will consist of tourism workshops in Colombia’s three biggest cities: Bogota, Cali and Medellin. Colombian travel agents will be given information about selling Britain as a destination, as well as the support UKinbound and VisitBritain can offer them, including VisitBritain’s trade website and BritAgent programme. UKinbound and VisitBritain will also meet with representatives from Marca Pais, Colombia’s national tourism agency.

VisitBritain’s Nurture Market project fosters links with fast-growing emerging markets in which the tourism agency does not currently have a physical presence. Colombia has maintained a GDP growth of 4.8% – the fastest rate of any of the leading Latin American economies, surpassing Peru, which was top of the regional rankings in 2012 and 2013. The number of visits from Colombia to Britain – 24,000 in 2013 – is currently small but and the market is growing fast and £26 million was spent by visitors in 2013 alone.

Deirdre Wells, CEO of UKinbound, said: “UKinbound is delighted to be working with Avianca and VisitBritain on this trade mission. With over 100 businesses keen to meet our buyers, there is real excitement about building a vibrant tourism product around the new direct route from Bogota. The UK’s tourism offer is second to none, with world-class heritage, beautiful countryside and coastline, outstanding sport and culture. This roadshow provides a unique opportunity to work with one of the fastest-growing tourism economies to ensure that that the UK’s tourism product is firmly on the Colombian visitor’s itinerary.”

Keith Beecham, Overseas Network Director at VisitBritain, added: “Avianca’s new Bogota-London route marks the first direct flight between Colombia and Britain for a decade and will be instrumental in boosting tourism between our two countries. This roadshow is a fantastic way of increasing Colombian agents’ knowledge of Britain’s tourism offer and I’d like to thank Avianca and the UK Embassy for their support. We look forward to welcoming more Colombian visitors to Britain in the near future to enjoy our unique culture, heritage, fashion, music and food.”
