Which countries offer the best value flights?

To calculate the rankings, Kiwi.com analysed over a million flights to find an average price of short-haul and long-haul flights on low cost and full service airlines from each of the countries.

BRNO, CZECH REPUBLIC –  Online travel agency Kiwi.com have produced their annual ranking detailing the cost of air travel in 80 countries. As a company which prides itself on offering the best value ticket prices for customers, Kiwi.com undertook the research in order to help make travellers aware of countries that offer good opportunities for affordable travel. Following on from the findings of last year’s Flight Price Index, this round also tracks the changes in the industry, providing a compelling insight into the fluctuating price of air travel around the world.

To calculate the rankings, Kiwi.com analysed over a million flights to find an average price of short-haul and long-haul flights on low cost and full service airlines from each of the countries. Domestic flights were calculated by finding an average airfare from the country’s capital to up to five major cities within the country, or to a major city nearby in a neighbouring country when no domestic flights were available. The price of international travel was calculated based on flights from all international airports within the country, to several international hubs. All flights were checked for the same dates of travel taking into account high and low seasons.

Greece ranks in position 32, with an average flight cost of 10.59 euros per 100 km of travel, factoring in both short haul and long haul journeys. This compares with the most affordable country, Malaysia, averaging a flight cost of 3.84 euros per 100 km of travel. At the other end of the ranking, Belgium calculated at a cost over 13 times higher, at 50.21 euros per 100 km of travel. Greece placed in position 19 in 2016’s ranking.

Ticket prices fluctuate constantly and for many reasons. Some of the changes from one year to the next can be attributed to fuel prices, sociopolitical shifts like Brexit, and recent elections. Egypt and Turkey, for example, saw a decrease in ticket prices because of a decrease in demand as a result of regional turmoil," said Kiwi.com CEO Oliver Dlouhy. "By tracking flight cost by country, travellers have more information with which to choose destinations that allow them to travel further on their budget."

Further findings from the ranking include:

  • Romania offers most affordable domestic flights on low cost airlines, at 2.79 euros per 100 km of travel
  • Qatar offers the most expensive domestic flights on low cost airlines, at 80.42 euros per 100 km of travel
  • Brazil offers the most affordable domestic flights on full service airlines, at 3.66 euros per 100 km
  • Chile offers the most expensive domestic flights on full service airlines, at 139.71 euros per 100 km
  • Sweden offers the most affordable international flights on low cost airlines, at 1.20 euros per 100 km
  • The United Arab Emirates offers the most expensive international flight on low cost and full service airlines, at 35.67 euros and 45.16 euros per 100 km.
  • Lithuania offers the most affordable international flight on full service airlines, at 2.30 euros per 100 km.
