The National Cruise Strategy in Cyprus aims at the sustainable development of infrastructure, services and tourism promotion.

The Cypriot Government, recognizing the strategic importance of cruise tourism for the economic development of the country, has started the process of public consultation with the aim of creating a National Strategy for Cruise Tourism. This initiative is part of the wider framework of strengthening the tourism product of Cyprus, with the aim of making the country an attractive and preferred destination in the Eastern Mediterranean for cruises.

The Vision and Mission

The National Strategy for Cruise Tourism aims to develop an integrated and sustainable framework for the management and promotion of the sector. With a vision for Cyprus to become a leading destination in the region, this strategy focuses on optimizing cruise-related infrastructure, processes and services, as well as developing and promoting the country’s tourism product.

The strategy for cruise tourism is based on four main pillars:

  1. Infrastructures: The upgrading and development of port and other related infrastructures is considered a fundamental factor for the success of the strategy. Cyprus has advantages in cruise tourism due to its geographical location, and its infrastructure should be strengthened to support the increased demand and improve the visitor experience.
  2. Procedures and Services: Improving passenger arrival, departure and service procedures is critical to enhancing Cyprus’ competitiveness as a cruise destination. Special emphasis will be placed on managing the passenger experience from the moment they disembark to their departure.
  3. Product Development and Promotion: The promotion of cruise tourism in Cyprus through targeted campaigns and partnerships with cruise lines is vital to the success of the strategy. The aim is to strengthen the image of Cyprus as a destination that offers unique experiences and high quality services.
  4. Institutional Structure and Governance: The establishment of a Cruise Tourism Development Committee, which will be responsible for monitoring and implementing the strategy, is one of the main axes of the effort. The committee will coordinate the actions between the stakeholders, ensuring the effective implementation of the action plan.
Public Consultation and Next Steps

The public consultation, which will run until 6 September 2024, allows stakeholders to actively participate in shaping the strategy. Their views and proposals will contribute to the formulation of a strategy that will meet the needs of the sector and achieve the sustainable development of cruise tourism in Cyprus.

After the completion of the consultation, the recording of the existing situation will begin, which will be completed by February 2025. The action plan is expected to be completed by June 2025, laying the basis for the implementation of the objectives of the National Strategy.

The National Strategy for Cruise Tourism is an ambitious effort to strengthen Cyprus’ tourism product and create a sustainable future for the sector. With the right implementation of the strategy, Cyprus can emerge as a leading cruise destination, while strengthening its economy and showcasing its rich culture to a global audience.
