The government last week answered the Archeological Society regarding their objections to the construction of the Olympic R-wing center in Schinas, which is planned to be used for the 2004 Athens Olympics Games.
In a note, Minister of Culture E.Venizelos said that all objections to the scheme until now had concerned the environmental side rather than historic nature, and he noted that despite of this the plan to construct the rowing center had been public knowledge since 1996. It needs to be reminded that the Archaeological Society has repeatedly stated that it is against the planned rowing center because the site chosen had major historical significance. Other associations such as WWF-Hellas have also voiced the same concern and note that it going to cause irreversible damage to the ecosystem of the Schinias wetland, one of the last remaining such habitats in Attica. The area in question is near Marathona, and known as one of the most historic regions in Greece. Historian’s claim that it was here that Athenians under Miltiades won the 490 BC battle against the forces of the Persian king Artafernes.
