According to a recent Eurostat<.> study, Germans led the list of tourist arrivals to Greece in 1999, followed by Britons, Italians and Austrians. The study, which was released at the end of April, concerns the number of overnight stays in some of Greece's most popular hotels. More precisely, at least 34.1 percent of the overnight stays recorded in 1999 were from German tourists, while people from Britain registered with 14 percent, Italians with 6.1 percent and Austrians with 5.7 percent. The citizens, of the four above-mentioned nations, cover at least 59.9 percent of the tourist inflow to Greece (or number of overnight stays recorded). Moreover, and in accordance to the same figures, tourism within the European Union marked an increase in the area of 4.4 percent over the figure recorded a year earlier.
