International tourism grew faster in 1999 than originally reported at the start of 2000, the World Tourism Organisation (WTO<.>) reports.

Revised results for 1999 show 663 million people spent at least one night in a foreign country last year, up 4.1% over the previous year.

Spending on international tourism reached $453 billion a growth rate of nearly 3% over 1998 results.

Ninety-two percent of last year's international tourism has now been recorded and WTO found the preliminary estimates released in January were somewhat conservative.

The new totals fall in line with WTO's long-term growth forecast 'Tourism: 2020 Vision' which predicts that the tourism sector will expand by an average of 4.1% a year over the next two decades, surpassing a total of one billion international travellers by 2010 and reaching 1.6 billion by the year 2020.
