Optimism for record arrivals this year to Greece

Greek Development Minister Evangelos Venizelos announced that he expects to see a 10% increase in arrival<.>s to Greece this year when compared with last year's total that reached almost 12 million.
"The only problem we have," he said "is with the American market, which I hope will be short-lived. All of our other markets are reacting positively to Greece."
George Tsilides of Athens-based Georges Travel, an agency that deals mainly in tour packages to Greece from the USA, says he had very few cancellations from the American market after the Yugoslav<.> crisis broke out: "But I expect to pick up that loss easily and perhaps by the end of the year post another increase in arrivals from the States."
He says his company deals in special tourism packages, such as study, religious and culture tours, and people that book these packages plan a long time in advance so it would take a lot to get them to change their minds. "As well," says Mr. Tsilides, "people that take these tours are very well educated and thus know the area well and know when there's a real danger and when there's not."
Meanwhile, latest statistics -the month of May – show a substantial increase in tourism traffic to the southern parts of Greece. Some areas have experienced increases of more than 15%. Most Greek islands, particularly Crete and Rhodes, have been experiencing record number of arrivals.
In general, according to data from the National Statistics Services, overnights for the April-May period are up by 2.31%. When May is taken alone, the increase over the same month last year reaches 4.32%. The average occupancy rate for Greek hotels for the month of May reached 71.63% compared with 68.63% posted in the previous May.
For northern Greece, just two areas posted dramatic drops in overnights compared with the April-May period of last year. Thessaloniki posted a drop of 7.06% and Corfu a drop of 8.55%. For May alone, the Corfu hotel units covered some of the previous month's losses with a drop of 5.16% in overnights. The above data came from a sample study of 288 hotels, which represent about 60% of the country's total.
In the meantime, arrivals on charter flights to Greece's main airports during the same period reached 887,997 people, which is a 16.15% increase against the same period of last year. For May alone, the increase reached 18.23%.
