Positive tourism picture

A major improvement was seen in Greece's tourism sector during the month of July, and for the first seven months of this year.

According to Greece's National Statistics Services, overnights at Greek hotels increased 6.26% in July when compared with the same month last year. The largest increase, more than 12%, was recorded in Rhodes and Lasithi, while the Athens area saw a drop of 8.43% in overnights.

For the first seven months of the year, the overall increase in overnights reached 5.24% when compared with the same month last year.

Athens, however, along with Thessaloniki and Corfu experienced a drop in overnights, mostly caused by the recent problems in Yugoslavia<.>.

Hotel occupancy rates reached 97.76% on the whole for the month of July, compared with 90.12% recorded last July. Average occupancy rate for the seven months of the year reached 75.99% compared with 72.21% seen in the same 7-month period last year….
