The European online travel market expected to be worth 6.8 billion Euros in 2002

According to results from a report first published in March 2000 and last updated in July 2002 Trends in European Internet Distribution – of Travel and Tourism Services by Carl H. Marcussen, the online travel market in Western Europe was worth 4.7 billion Euros in 2001 (up from $2.6 billion in 2000) and represented 2.2% of the travel market (up from 1.3% in 2000).



Carl H. Marcussen expects a further increase of about 43% during the year 2002 to about 6.8 billion Euros (3% of the market) and to about 14.7 billion Euros by 2006.



The report also revealed that in 2001, the breakdown of the European online travel market by type of service was as follow:


  • Air travel with 60.4% and 59.8% predicted for 2002.

  • Package Tours with 12.5% and 11.9% predicted for 2002.

  • Hotels with 12.3% and 11.9% predicted for 2002.

  • Rail with 8.1% and 9.5% predicted for 2002.

  • Rental cars with 3.9% and 4.2% predicted for 2002.

  • Other Services with 2.8% and 2.7% also predicted for 2002.
