Competition forces Anek-Dane Sea Lines to order new ferries

Anek Lines<.> of Crete is now in discussions with shipyards for the construction of two new ferry vessels for Dane Sea Lines<.> – Anek has about a 50% stake in the Dodecanissos ferry line.
The Crete-based line is also ready to turn over a four-year-old vessel to Dane so it can replace its older vessel Kantia on its Rhodes-Piraeus route. The replacement vessel can carry 987 passengers and 200 vehicles.
Dane says it has already formulated a bank agreement for the purchase and expects to place the vessel on the Rhodes-Piraeus route within the next 20 days.
The companies have been forced to move quickly as the Greek ministry of merchant marine has called for proposals from other ferry lines to run vessels on the Rhodes-Piraeus route.
Superfast Ferries quickly informed the ministry that it would be willing to place a new fast-ferry vessel on the Piraeus-Kos-Rhodes route and cut present passenger fares on that route by 19%.
The company also proposed to place a new vessel on the Piraeus-Chania route and promised to reduce present fares by 23.5% if the ministry approved the proposal….
