Pattaya reporting strong growth in arrivals___

Pattaya, one of Thailand’s most popular beach resorts, saw record arrivals in 2005 and is looking to further improve on the number this year. Visitor arrivals to Pattaya totalled 5,338,009 last year, up 6.54% over 2004. Of these, 3,533,769 or 66.20% of the total, were foreigners.

The average length of stay was 3.41 days and average daily expenditure 2,819.60 baht per person per day. This contributed a total of about 48.52 billion baht to the Thai economy. In 2005, the resort had a total of 293 accommodation establishments with 34,007 rooms. They had an average occupancy of 57.78%.

Located about 130-km southeast of Bangkok, the beach resort is easily accessible from downtown Bangkok via two modern motorways in about 90 minutes. In recent years, it has seen the emergence of a wide range of tourism-related infrastructure developments, including hotels, convention centres and a broad variety of tourism products.

Among some of the recent developments:

Pattaya Beach Bus has recently opened its Red Line service, which runs a long, circular route around the city. This is the second route after the moderately successful Green Line running downtown. The Beach Bus service is the first and long overdue public bus service in Pattaya and helps residents and tourists get around in more comfort.

Healthland Spa has just opened, a branch of the popular spa in Bangkok. Arguably the best stand-alone spa in the city, it offers first-rate spa service at an affordable price. Facilities adhere to the highest standards of cleanliness, safety and privacy.

Fairtex is Pattaya’s newest entertainment complex, combining a Thai boxing school for foreign visitors, a traditional Thai massage service and a superior fitness center.

Diving around Pattaya is becoming increasingly popular and many foreigners come to Pattaya yearly to become a certified diver or a certified dive instructor.

Shopping has also been booming and changing towards more sophisticated customers. The Royal Garden Plaza is soon to be supplemented by Central Department Store which is building a new mall downtown. The Major Cineplex movie complex is also on the way.

InterContinental is building a property in Pattaya with other international chains scouting around.

Tourism Authority of Thailand Governor Mrs. Juthamas Siriwan commented, “The meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibition (MICE) industry in Pattaya is also faring well with a number of high-profile conferences being held this year.”

TAT surveys show that the number of rooms in all accommodation establishments grew up 28% in 2005. With more rooms coming up this year, Pattaya is certain to see further growth in arrivals in the years ahead.
