World Tourism Day promotes cultural heritage

World Tourism Day, celebrated September 27, attempted to promote cultural heritage but little was seen that would spotlight the important and growing relationship between the two, especially on the local scene.
The World Tourism Organization<.> and UNESCO, however, insisted that the best way to promote the preservation of cultural heritage is through sustainable tourism. In this respect, they said, the private sector has an important role to play.
Effective partnerships between the private sector and public sector at all levels, they said, can maximize tourism's positive contribution and minimize its potentially negative effects on cultural environments.
"The thirst for knowledge and firsthand experience of the wonders of the world will undoubtedly continue to drive the thriving cultural tourism sector," said WTO's secretary general, Francesco Frangiallli and UNESCO's director general, Federico Mayor, in a joint announcement.
"Properly managed and planned, cultural tourism plays an essential role in the preservation of world heritage as it generates the financial means to safeguard heritage sites and monuments," they added.
Both of the above organizations cooperate actively year round to promote the preservation of cultural heritage through sustainable tourism. Their two major long-term inter-regional projects of culture and tourism itineraries are the Silk Road and the Slave Route….
