In a ceremony to celebrate shipping at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on June 21, Cunard Line President and COO Pamela Conover and International Council of Cruise Lines (ICCL) President Michael Crye presented IMO Secretary-General Efthimios Mitropoulos with a model of the Queen Mary 2 ocean liner.
Mitropoulos said he believed the image of shipping needed promotion and referred to Queen Mary 2 as a symbol for all that is excellent in shipping today.
Queen Mary 2 is the largest, longest, tallest and widest ocean liner ever built and incorporates all the latest IMO standards with regard to safety, security and environmental protection. Queen Mary 2 is the most technologically advanced ocean liner ever built and represents the future of passenger shipping, said Conover.
We are proud of the cruise industry and that we can lead as an example in the areas of safety, security and environment for all of shipping, said Crye. He emphasized the cruise lines` commitment to these issues through ICCL`s involvement as a non-governmental consultative organization to the IMO.
Also in attendance were Mr. David Jamieson, United Kingdom Minister for Shipping; Peter Ratcliffe, CEO of P&O Princess Cruises; Commodore Ronald Warwick, master of Queen Mary 2; and the delegates from the IMO Council session.
At a reception following the ceremony, the ICCL, through its charitable arm, the Cruise Industry Charitable Foundation, presented the International Search and Rescue Fund with a check for $10,000. The recently established fund will assist countries that do not have the resources to put into place an adequate search and rescue infrastructure.
