More evidence of the renewal of Vancouver`s tourism industry, Tourism Vancouver says 2004 produced a number of records in meeting and convention business.

A record number of lead room nights representing future meeting and convention business for Vancouver were generated by Tourism Vancouver`s sales team. Approximately 858,000 lead room nights were recorded for events planned between 2005 and 2011, representing some $263 million in direct visitor spending.

A big part of reaching this figure is booking meetings that will use the new convention centre expansion, said Dave Gazley, Tourism Vancouver`s vice president, Meeting and Convention Sales. The new facility is integral to the tourism industry`s ability to grow and fulfill its economic potential as we head towards 2010 and beyond.

The number of definite room nights booked during 2004 was another positive step toward renewal. Over 211,000 room nights were secured for upcoming meetings and conventions, with an estimated impact of $65 million direct visitor spending.

Vancouver also experienced a record year for citywide conventions hosting 24 in 2004, each representing over 1,000 out-of-town delegates. On average, the city plays host to 14 citywides per year, with 19 projected for 2005.

Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell noted that strong partnerships ensure success for the local tourism industry. I`ve been involved in sales calls and bids with Tourism Vancouver and understand how important working together is to creating a strong tourism sector for our city, said Mayor Campbell. The partnership between the City of Vancouver and Tourism Vancouver, along with their partners and the convention centre, continues to deliver significant, shared successes for Vancouver and British Columbia`s convention industry.
