Industry group, the Airports Council International (ACI<.>), (representing more than 450 airports in 48 countries across Europe) said in mid October that many European airports might just face inevitable closure if the EU fails to address their insurance problems. In a statement, ACI said major airports that used to be covered for up to US $1 billion per incident before the September 11 attacks in the United States now were being offered insurance coverage for no more than US $5 to $50 million.

The announcement noted that although negotiations are ongoing, insurers are only offering airport operators a fraction of the cover previously available. Director general of ACI Europe Philippe Hamon stressed that unless a solution to the airport insurance crisis is found within days, the inevitable closure of some European airports risks further deepening the crisis faced by airlines and air travelers.

With this in mind. ACI Europe, which handles some 90 percent of commercial air traffic in Europe and more than one billion passengers year, called on the European Commission to conduct an immediate assessment of this insurance crisis. The statement noted that this should include a long-term solution for the provision of adequate insurance cover and a probe into whether insurance companies might have engaged in collusive actions after last month`s attacks.
