The United Federation of Travel Agents’ Associations (UFTAA) board meeting in Casablanca (Morocco) unanimously endorsed the UNWTO initiative of a World Responsible Tourism Day launched at the WTM. Chairman Joe Borg Olivier noted that UFTAA has a long track record in support of social responsibility in tourism. UFTAA was one of the initiators to the, now widely recognized, campaign against abuse of children in the travel and tourism industry. UFTAA is still co-chairing the UNWTO Taskforce and is also representing the employers in the UNWTO World Tourism Ethics Committee. UFTAA also contributes to the Tourism Emergency Response Network (TERN) and Tourism Recovery Work groups.
Mr. Borg Olivier pointed out that an increased awareness was needed by all stakeholders including the retail and receptive travel agency management and employees; UFTAA will initiate a campaign with its members and hope to be able to show tangible actions and results in time for the next Tourism Responsible Day November 2007.
