The serious harm that the strike is causing to the company, its customers, shareholders, and other employees, which is compounded by the economic slowdown, obliges Iberia<.> to rule out no option that could lead to a solution of the conflict.

Iberia airlines yesterday sent a letter to the SEPLA pilots union in which, in face of the latter`s intransigence in contract negotiations, and in order to avoid further harm than that already being caused by the current strike, it proposes that both parties voluntarily submit to arbitration, which would be binding on both.

The offer, with a deadline for acceptance by the union of 11 AM today, July 12, consists of the following points:

* As a prior requisite, the SEPLA union in Iberia must call off the strike and guarantee labor peace during the arbitration.

* The two parties will designate a mutually acceptable arbitrator within 24 hours of the acceptance of the offer.

* The designated arbitrator will act with complete independence and will establish the procedures to be followed for resolving the conflict. In addition, the arbitrator will dictate the resolution in a maximum period of 15 days, unless the arbitrator finds that more time is needed.

* The matters to be submitted to arbitration will be the 7th collective bargaining agreement and the interpretation of its disputed points. Both parties pledge that within 48 hours they will submit their proposals of points to be arbitrated.

* Both parties pledge to accept the resolution that is dictated, which will be binding and have the legal effect of a collective bargaining agreement.

* Lastly, any doubts or questions about the interpretation of the resolution will be submitted to the arbitrator, who will have 10 days to resolve them, and the matters covered in the arbitrator`s resolution will not constitute grounds for further strikes or labor conficts.
