The Royal Spa at Le Royal Meridien Bahrain has been lauded as the outstanding hotel design project in the Middle East region in the DEPA Middle East Hotel Awards 2002 held in Cairo last week, where Le Meridien scooped a total of five awards.

The resort property, which is Bahrain`s only beachfront hotel, was also highly commended in the `Conference Hotel of the Year` award category, having been nominated in five categories in total.

While, for Le Meridien as a group, the awards were a comprehensive success with two additional awards being won by Le Meridien Dubai (best environmentally-friendly hotel and best public relations campaign), and Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort & Spa, Dubai, was highly commended in the Leisure Hotel of the Year category.

Francesco Borrello, general manager of the luxury property in Bahrain, claimed the awards confirmed the view that Le Royal Meridien Bahrain combined the finest business and leisure facilities in a `one solution` property.

The Royal Spa is one of a kind, offering a tranquil environment that contributes to its reputation as one of the finest spa facilities in the region, and we are delighted that it has been recognised by a panel of experts in the hospitality sector, he said.

In addition, these awards acknowledge that the recent expansion and refurbishment of our conference facilities has ensured they are among the best on offer in the Middle East.

Russel Sharpe, Le Meridien`s regional senior vice president, sales and marketing added that the commitment of the owners in ongoing investment in projects such as the expansion of conference rooms, spas and innovative restaurant outlets is key to maintaining the edge. In Bahrain specifically, The Royal Spa, a new marina and a planned deluxe villa extension have helped to consolidate the reputation of Le Royal Meridien Bahrain as the kingdom`s flagship hotel.

Take Bahrain, our hotel was the only Bahrain property included in the DEPA hotel award nomination list, and it is gratifying that the hotel has achieved deserved success, in the face of fierce competition from around the region, said Sharpe.

The DEPA Middle East Hotel Awards judging panel comprised Mohammed Buzizi, CEO of Bahrain Hotels Company; Stephen Head, vice president, Lausanne Hospitality Consulting, Switzerland; Russell Kett, managing director, HVS International, London; Stuart Scher, chairman, Taylor Nelson Sofres Hospitality & Leisure, London, and Tarek Mansour, senior partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Cairo.
