Economic Development and Transport Minister, Andrew Davies AM, Wales Tourist Board Chairman Philip Evans and Chie Executive Jonathan Jones, will today (Monday 14 June) launch the Wales Tourist Board`s Sports Tourism in Wales: A Framework for Action.

Wales is perceived to be one of the best locations in the UK for sporting activities due to the quality of its natural environment, excellent facilities, and its continuing success as a host for major sporting events. The Wales Tourist Board, recognises that this is an area where Wales has a competitive advantage and potential for growth. The new action plan provides a framework for action by the Wales Tourist Board and partner organisations to deliver the Welsh Assembly Government strategy to maximise the social and economic benefits of sport related tourism in Wales.

Economic Development and Transport Minister, Andrew Davies AM said: Wales has a proven, successful track record in hosting major international sporting events such as the FA Cup Final, the Rugby World Cup and the Wales Rally GB. The new framework provides a platform to build on this success, and increase the significant contribution tourism already makes to the Welsh economy.

Wales Tourist Board Chairman, Philip Evans commented:

Our vision is for Wales to be recognised internationally as an icon location offering diverse and exciting opportunities for visitors, based on the quality and variety of our natural environment, facilities and distinct culture.

The economic significance of international and national events, increased awareness of health and well-being have increased interest in this sector over the last decade. Overall, 89% of holiday trips by UK residents to Wales involve some form of activity and we know that the holiday `experience` is now the most important factor in selecting a destination. This strategy is now placing Wales far ahead of its competition

Philip Carling, chairman of the Sports Council for Wales added:

The Sports Council for Wales is delighted to have played a part in helping Wales Tourist Board to formulate its action plan for Sports Tourism in Wales. We further look forward to working in partnership with WTB to help maximise the social and economic benefits of sport -related tourism. It is clear that the new role that sport is being asked to play in advancing the well-being of the nation is not confined to health promotion. The significant changes that are taking place within the Council will see us working with Education, Economic Development and Health as well as Culture, Welsh Language and Sport.

These are exciting developments for us and our work with WTB is just one step on the way.

Nicole Cooke, BBC Welsh Sports Personality of the Year, current Women`s World Cup Series Champion and a member of the British Team in the 2004 Olympics, explains the importance of raising the profile of Wales as a sports tourism destination:

Wales has a wealth of natural assets, top class sporting events and a successful record in hosting major events – which play a very important part in raising the profile of the host nation. It`s important that we spread the word about what Wales has to offer as a sports destination.

The photocall launch will also be a chance to welcome back Wales Tourist Board employees at the finish of their 4-day charity cycle ride on the Celtic Trail National Cycle Route. The team of seven will have covered approximately 200 miles in four days to raise money for charity, to show what a wonderful place Wales is for outdoor recreation and to practise what they preach!
