Glasgow unveils summer of big international conference wins

Glasgow has announced it has won a number of big new international conferences over the summer which are worth almost £12.5million for the city. Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (GCMB) revealed that in the past five months its Convention Bureau has confirmed 15 international conferences will be coming to the city.

Molly Doheny, Head of the Convention Bureau at GCMB, said: “Glasgow has had an extremely successful summer of new international conference wins.

“The market is hugely competitive at the moment, but these wins demonstrate that conference organisers are giving a big vote of confidence to Glasgow’s offering of good transport links, first class and varied meetings facilities and wide range of hotel beds to meet all budgets.”

Glasgow is hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2014, which has generated a huge amount of infrastructure development in areas such as roads and rail links, and new hotels and venues.

GCMB has been promoting a consistent message to the meetings market that despite the recession, Glasgow is pushing full steam ahead on major infrastructure improvements as it prepares to host the Commonwealth Games.

Ben Goedegebuure, Director of Sales at the Scottish Exhibition + Conference Centre (SECC), said: “It’s great to see how coming together to bring business to the city pays off. The significant number of conferences won recently is a testament to our ‘Team Glasgow’ approach.

“Instead of our city venues and partners competing against each other to win business, we all recognize and understand the merits of working together to create a united front. In doing so we are able to deliver competitive offerings and secure support from locally related disciplines and academia for organisers to tap into.”

The new international conferences confirmed over the summer include:
– International Association of Paediatric Dentistry, 2015
– A worldwide medical association of 3,000 delegates, 2011
– European Proteomics Association, 2012
– International Conference on Information and Knowledge Management, 2011
– European Conference on Digital Libraries, 2010
– European Association of Diagnostic Imaging 2009
– European Forum of Sign Language Interpreters 2010
– International workshop on Statistical Modelling 2010
– European Composers Forum ARTMUSFAIR 2009

The International Congress and Convention Association rankings for 2008 confirmed Glasgow is the UK’s conference capital when it comes to the numbers of international association delegates. Glasgow was ranked first in the UK and 33rd in the world for international association delegates, attracting 20,070 in 2008.
