The American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation (AH&LEF), the not-for-profit affiliate of the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA), selected three recipients for the 2006 Arthur J. Packard Memorial Scholarship Competition.

The first-place $5,000 winner was Matthew Ardakanian of the University of Delaware; receiving $3,000 as second-place winner was Brad Barron of Michigan State University; and third-place winner Ashley Loyd of Washington State University received $2,000. In addition, all recipients were awarded commemorative plaques.

The national scholarship competition began in 1974 to honor third-generation hotelier Packard in recognition of his accomplishments in the lodging industry. It is open to AH&LEF-affiliated four-year educational institutions, that in turn nominate their best students based on academic performance, hospitality work experience, extracurricular involvement, financial need, and career goals.

“These students fulfill our goal of showcasing bright and ambitious young professionals of the lodging industry. Meeting the standards of this competition illustrates the high caliber of students who are pursuing their educational endeavors to become hoteliers,” said AH&LA President/CEO Joseph A. McInerney, CHA.
