The European Federation of the Associations of Professional Congress Organisers, is set to have an even stronger voice in global tourism, thanks to appointment of its President, Julio Abreu, to the WTO’s World Committee on Tourism Ethics.

He becomes one of two senior industry personalities representing the interests of employers among the Affiliate Membership of the World Tourism Organisation from now until 2011. His appointment was approved at the 17th session of the UNWTO General Assembly held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.

Earlier this year, EFAPCO became the first PCO-based body to be invited to join the WTO’s Affiliate Members Council.

“This new involvement with worldwide tourism will further enhance EFAPCO’s drive towards greater recognition from the EU and our campaign for more members in all quarters of Europe,” said Abreu.

“It also represents further recognition for EFAPCO’s drive to introduce the highest possible and clearly understood professional standards among PCOs – a drive which is central to discussions at our third Annual Congress which takes place in Warsaw, Poland, from January 10 to 12.”

“EFAPCO’s new WTO appointment is another milestone in the quest to secure greater recognition for our profession as PCOs. It shows clearly that our role in the business travel industry is being appreciated and respected.”

“I’m very proud to receive this appointment, as it perhaps shows recognition about the ways in which I and my company have conducted business over many years. I have always tried to maintain the highest possible ethical standards,” Abreu added.

“Working with this committee will be a real privilege. I have known the participants, and their great qualities, for a long time, and I look forward with high expectations to the first meeting, which will take place at UNWTO Headquarters in Madrid in March.

“Our activities at both European and global levels continue to pay rich dividends in terms of member recruitment.

"The Federation has nine national associations in membership, representing over 800 meetings industry professionals, including more than 300 dedicated PCOs. In addition there are 97 direct members, who welcome closer involvement with EFAPCO, ranging from event organisers and hotel groups to travel and transportation companies, exhibition organisers, university departments and trade media.”
