"Last fall President Bush participated in an industry ad campaign urging Americans to get out and enjoy our country's great destinations. He has followed up on that appeal by issuing a Presidential Proclamation for National Tourism Week. The Proclamation urges Americans and people around the globe to experience the hospitality and quality of our Nation's immense variety of attractions," said William S. Norman, president and CEO of the Travel Industry Association of America. "The words of the President will make a tremendous contribution to rebuilding the strength of our industry."

National Tourism Week was first declared and celebrated in 1984 with a Presidential Proclamation issued by President Ronald Reagan. The event promotes a wider understanding of the importance of travel and tourism as a major U.S. industry that is vital to the economic stability and growth of the nation.
