Barry S. Sternlicht, chairman and chief executive officer of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc., will be honored at the lodging industry`s premier investment conference, the Americas Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS), with this year`s International Society of Hospitality Consultants (ISHC) Pioneer Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions and broad vision for strengthening the industry. Proceeds from ALIS, held January 18-20, 2005, at vThe Westin Century Plaza Hotel & Spa and the St. Regis – Los Angeles, support the scholarship and research missions of the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation (AH&LEF), an affiliate of the American Hotel & Lodging Association.

Co-hosted by AH&LA and the Burba Hotel Network (BHN), ALIS is designed to address the unique needs of the hospitality-investment community and provide a meeting and networking place for hotel executives, investors, lenders, developers, and professional financial advisors. ALIS features an extensive array of seminars hosted by leading experts and investors discussing important trends and identifying new opportunities.

Sternlicht is the chairman and chief executive officer of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc., one of the leading hotel and leisure companies in the world with more than 750 properties in 80 countries and 110,000 employees. One of the youngest and most respected leaders in the hotel and leisure industry today, Barry places as strong an emphasis on his humanitarian efforts as he does his business pursuits. Starwood is a National Partner of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk to Cure Diabetes Program, mobilizing associate volunteer power across U. S. communities. Sternlicht’s leadership and fundraising efforts led to prestigious national honors such as JDRF’s Man of the Year and Chairman’s Award. Sternlicht has focused Starwood volunteer time and resources on City Cares of America, Habitat for Humanity, Junior Achievement, Ronald McDonald House, UNICEF and others.

Barry is a trustee of Brown University. He serves on the Board of Directors of The Estee Lauder Companies, HealthMarket, the National Advisory Board of JP Morgan Chase, and the Advisory Board of Eurohypo. He serves on the boards of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s National Leadership Advocacy Program, Fairfield County’s Junior Achievement and Kids in Crisis, Greenwich YMCA, Channel 13/WNET, Harvard Club, Business Committee for the Arts, and the Center for Christian-Jewish Understanding. Barry has helped set the standard for what a lodging industry leader can accomplish — not only in terms of building a phenomenally successful brand and business, but in the broader scope of giving back, building others up, and building a strong future for the hotel industry, said BHN President and Conference Chairman Jim Burba.
