The Fairmont Vancouver Airport Introduces North America`s First Hypoallergenic Hotel Floor

The Fairmont Vancouver Airport (FVA<.>) is the first hotel in North America to offer an entire floor of hypoallergenic guestrooms

The Fairmont Vancouver Airport (FVA<.>) is the first hotel in North America to offer an entire floor of hypoallergenic guestrooms. All rooms on the hotel`s 11th floor, 42 rooms in total, have been converted to hypoallergenic or low allergen content.

This initiative comes as a direct result of increasing guest demand, says Francis Parkinson, General Manager, The Fairmont Vancouver Airport. The number of requests to provide hypoallergenic pillows and comforters in guest rooms has been increasing in recent months and we saw an opportunity to take the next step and provide a much more comfortable environment for our guests.

The project was lead by Executive Housekeeper Florencio de Dios who extensively researched the products and systems that would create a hypoallergenic room. de Dios took the initiative beyond the substitution of feather pillows and duvets and included filtration systems to further purify the air and water and a central vacuum system to dramatically reduce dust in the rooms. One guestroom will be outfitted with hardwood flooring for allergy sufferers who may be sensitive to carpeting.

The hotel consulted with Dr. Robert Schellenberg, a renowned allergy specialist working with the University of British Columbia and St. Paul`s Hospital in Vancouver. This is a smart initiative given that 30 per cent of adults in western countries now have some type of allergies or asthma and the numbers are growing, says Dr. Schellenberg. I am impressed by what I`ve seen and I applaud The Fairmont Vancouver Airport for taking this lead.

Hypoallergenic features include:

Fibre cluster pillows and duvets – bedding made with synthetic material with the feel of feather.

All linens washed at 155 degrees Celsius (310 degrees Fahrenheit), a temperature sufficient to eliminate the need for chlorine.

All linens changed daily.

Filters installed at air intake source to provide the entire hotel with hospital quality air.

Carbon activated filters installed on taps in 10 rooms.

Central vacuum system with double canisters installed throughout the hotel to significantly reducing dust released into rooms taking dust out of the rooms rather than throwing

All nut products removed from in-room snack trays.

Hypoallergenic bathroom amenities supplied upon request.

No strong-scented or ammonia-based cleaning products.

Non-smoking and a no pet designation specific to the floor.

Hardwood flooring in one room.

The 392-room Fairmont Vancouver Airport, which opened in 1999 above the US departures level, in the Vancouver International Airport Terminal, continues to define the standards for airport accommodation around the world.

The creation of a hypoallergenic floor has been a team effort – from our housekeeping team to our engineering and culinary departments, everyone has had a hand in this initiative, says Parkinson. I`m very proud of my team and we are all looking forward to the guest reaction.
