The Westin<.> New York at Times Square, the newest landmark at the Crossroads of the World and New York City’s largest new-build hotel in 17 years, opened Friday, October 18, 2002. Mayor Bloomberg and others attended the hotel’s premier and dedication on October 16. Developed, built and owned by affiliates of Tishman Realty & Construction Co., Inc. and designed by internationally renowned Arquitectonica of Miami, the 863-room, 45-story glass prismatic tower, located at 43rd Street and 8th Avenue, beckons visitors with a beam of light soaring into the Manhattan skyline. Managed by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. under the Westin brand, it also boasts the amenities and services required to be Manhattan’s business hotel of the 21st century.

The Westin New York at Times Square is destined to become a landmark in a city known for efficiency, glamour and drama, said David Sargent, director of sales and marketing for The Westin New York at Times Square. It’s the crowning accent to the renaissance of Times Square.

A symbolic fusion of earth and sky, the hotel showcases a beam of light that begins in the nine-story interior atrium before breaking through to the copper, blue, and silver glass facade. The beam gives the illusion that it splits the tower as it arches to the top and beyond. The same earth and sky palette, in glass and light, is repeated in the dramatic open space of the north lobby. The entrance features a stainless-steel and red-neon marquee and an arresting welcome carpet fashioned out of red light and illuminated Westin logos.

In November, The Westin New York at Times Square will become home to New York City’s first Shula’s Steak House. Named after its owner, Coach Don Shula, coach of the Miami Dolphins from 1970 to 1996 and the winningest coach in football history, Shula’s is themed after Coach Shula’s 1972 perfect season with the Miami Dolphin’s. The menus, which features custom-cut, aged Certified Angus Beef and seafood, are hand-painted on official NFL game footballs. All diners who order and finish Shula’s Steak House’s famous 48-Ounce Porterhouse will be inducted into the 48 Oz. Club.

The Westin New York at Times Square features superior business services and amenities. An expansive business center and Club Lounge, serving complimentary continental breakfast and evening hors d’oeuvres, caters to the Club Level Rooms and Suites.

All 863 guestrooms, including 126 Westin Executive Level Club Rooms and Suites, highlight contemporary design statements with crisp white linens, bold abstract art on muted wall coverings, sleek black furnishings, and colorful modern chairs, while providing the lush amenities, functionality and first-class service expected of a Westin. Many offer incredible views of the Times Square lights, the Manhattan skyline, the Hudson River and the New Jersey shoreline. Guestroom bathrooms boast custom-designed, dark-slate floor and wall coverings, and stainless-steel fixtures and countertops.

Guestrooms feature Westin’s signature Heavenly Bed — layer upon layer of fluffy down bed covers, comforters, and pillows — and its newest Heavenly Bath — a custom-designed Speakman showerhead that offers a choice of spray options from light mist to massage needles, as well as velour bathrobes, oversized, Brazilian combed cotton bathsheets, curved shower rods to provide extra elbow room, and refreshing and invigorating spa amenities.

Guestrooms also boast two-line phones including one cordless phone, voice mail, data ports with high-speed Internet access, a refrigerated refreshment center, a 27-inch television with cable, an AM/FM clock radio, individual climate control, a hair dryer, deluxe grooming amenities, an iron/ironing board, a large in-room safe equipped to fit a laptop, and a coffeemaker. Guests enjoy Westin’s Service Express(r), a one call does it all concept that allows guests to dial just one number on their telephone to order 24-hour room service, call the bellman or room attendant, or have any other request filled.

For dining and relaxing, in addition to Shula’s Steak House, The Westin New York at Times Square features Cosi, a gourmet pastry and sandwich shop, Bar 10; a sushi bar and 24-hour room service. A spa offers treatment rooms, men’s and women’s saunas and changing rooms. A large fitness center, on the 23rd floor, overlooks the Hudson River. There also is a concierge desk and a theatre ticket desk, among other services. Guests may access Times Square’s new E Walk, a 200,000 square-feet entertainment and retail complex featuring shops, entertainment venues, restaurants and a Loews 13-movie theatre.

The Westin New York at Times Square specializes in catering to small- to medium-sized meetings with 32 technically advanced meeting and breakout rooms ranging in size from 220 square feet to 3,500 square feet, including three ballrooms. Other meeting venues include the soaring interior atrium and 13-movie theatres connected to the hotel that seats from 176 to 526.
