Whether in trains, busses or cars – many travellers are having a tough time with the hot summer temperatures. Travelling in this unbearable heat can be a real problem.

So arriving at a hotel with an air conditioned room can be something to really look forward to. But in Europe you shouldn’t get your hopes up too soon that you will find your own personal air conditioner in your room. A new study by hotel.info, the leading online hotel reservation service for more than 210,000 hotels worldwide, shows there is a major discrepancy in the "air conditioner density" of hotels in the major European cities investigated. Many hotels still offer their guests a "warm welcome"; only this time the hotel room is where it’s especially warm.

Most air conditioned hotels in Madrid
Of the major European cities investigated in the study, the Spanish capital Madrid is the destination where the most hotel operators offer their guests comfortable hotel room temperatures (72.7%). Nearly three quarters of rooms are available with air conditioning in Madrid. Athens (69.1%), Budapest (66.7%) and Rome (66.6%) follow. Paris (38.6%) and Prague (37.9%) had an above average "air conditioner density" for their hotel rooms. Moscow, Warsaw and London had comparatively poor results, pampering only around every fourth guest with a comfortable room temperature. And Stockholm came in dead last with only 13.3% of rooms being air conditioned. Most hotel guests have to sweat it out during heat waves, which, admittedly, are not that common in Sweden.

The top 10 major European cities according to "air conditioner density" in the respective city’s hotels:

City Hotels with air conditioning in %
1. Madrid 72.7
2. Athens 69.1
3. Budapest 66.7
4. Rome 66.6
5. Paris 38.6
6. Prague 37.9
7. London 26.3
8. Warsaw 23.2
9. Moscow 23.0
10. Stockholm 13.3.
