The earthquake in Indonesia on Monday evening has not affected any of vThailand`s tourist spots, including those in the southern Andaman region, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

The TAT`s offices overseas have been instructed to publicise accurate information to foreign tourists, the organisation’s Deputy Governor, Suraphon Svetasreni, told on Tuesday.

No tourist areas in Thailand, including the six southern Andaman provinces hit by last December’s tsunami, have been affected by the earthquake on the Indonesian Nias Island, in North Sumatra Province, on Monday night, he said.

Local tourist association said there had been no bookings cancelled.

The earthquake, measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale, took place no long before midnight on Monday night.

The Meteorological Department issued an urgent warning of a possible new tsunami as a result.

The Meteorological Department’s warning, issued through the country’s official and media channels across the country, suggested an immediate evacuation of local residents and tourists in the six southern Andaman provinces.

The provinces, which were hit by the massive waves on 26 December, include Phuket, Phang-nga, Krabi, Ranong, Trang and Satun.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra told journalists on Tuesday morning that Thailand`s tsunami warning system would be operational within a week.

The premier said the country`s tsunami early warning system would be linked to the country’s major media networks, particularly TV and radio stations, and other local telecommunication systems, including mobile phone networks.
