A broad based training program in business plan development is being recommended for community based tourism organisations in the Caribbean to help them develop their business entrepreneurial skills. The recommendation comes at the end of a weeklong visioning and strategic planning workshop held in Trinidad and organised by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), in collaboration with the Trinidad-based Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI).

“It was felt that as a follow-up to the visioning and strategic planning workshop, specific skills development training should be conducted to help community based tourism organisations deal specifically with developing their business entrepreneurial skills,” said Mareba Scott, the CTO’s sustainable tourism specialist.

“Broad based training in business plan development would address a number of key areas including marketing and financial management,” she added.

The Workshop, the first of its kind, targeted persons involved in the development of community based tourism projects, including community organisations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and government agencies. It involved a series of in-class room activities, largely on a group basis,; the use of case studies; role-playing and a field trip to Matura, a site featured in the CTO’s study on Good Practices in Community- Based Tourism in the Caribbean. The study was funded under the Caribbean Regional Sustainable Tourism Development Programme (CRSTDP) as a joint initiative between the Sustainable Tourism, Human Resources Development and Research components of the programme.
