Agresso Travel Industry Solutions announced today the availability of carbon emission calculations within its OpenBook reporting solution. Travel professionals can now offer their clients information on the carbon emissions for booked itineraries, allowing the client to evaluate performance of their preferred mode of travel. Passengers may choose to receive an email at the time of booking detailing the carbon emissions for their specific itinerary, as well as those for alternative modes of travel for the same route. The passenger is therefore fully aware of the carbon emission load for his itinerary, as well as alternatives. Currently the system provides comparisons on emissions for the same itinerary by air, rail and vehicle.

The UK Government is one of the first organizations to avail itself of this new capability, according to Ian Wotton, managing director Redfern Travel, By providing detailed CO2 emission comparisons of rail versus domestic air travel, the government is able to persuade travelers to choose the cleanest option, in this case rail.

At the forefront of providing this type of information, Redfern purchased the OpenBook reporting system primarily for its CO2 reporting capability. We chose Agresso because of its flexibility, explains Wotton, adding Currently the system provides post-trip reports — these are also available as pre-trip advisories.

This capability and the accuracy of OpenBook`s calculations respond to customer awareness and demand for environmentally-sensitive choices says Charles Johnston, global sales director for Agresso Travel Industry Solutions, adding Passengers want to make choices based on accurate data. With OpenBook, travel managers can provide carbon footprints based on actual travel itineraries.

The new capability also enables environmentally-friendly corporations to create benchmarks in support of carbon reduction programs and determination of offsets, two measures that are becoming increasingly popular as awareness continues to rise.
