The Greek ministry of Transport ministry called for common airport security standards internationally, following the September 11th air terror attacks in Manhattan and Washington in the United States where thousands of people lost their lives. Minister Christos Verelis told reporters that stepped up security checks have been ordered at all Greek airports and noted that there have to be to be uniform specifications for security systems at all airports around the world. Asked to comment on the prospect of armed guards during flights, the Greek Minister said that the issue would be discussed at the upcoming international general assembly of civil aviation bodies.
