The Britain and London Visitor Centre prepares for the August Bank holiday rush as 24per cent of UK adults plan to take their holiday in Britain. This means one in four UK adults (approx 11.5million people) will be holidaying at home.



No passport, no inoculations, no problem – just a great place for a holiday. With hundreds of events and attractions across the country this bank holiday you are definitely spoilt for choice!

The Britain and London Visitor Centre has made the decision making process easy by narrowing down some of the best ideas, giving visitors and locals alike the perfect opportunity to enjoy the last long weekend of the year;



Mathew Street Festival, Liverpool, Merseyside – 26th – 29th August



Combined with International Beatles Festival Week, the annual Mathew Street Festival incorporates music related to the Fab Four and, for the first time, will showcase top bands. It will take place on Mathew Street and also on Pier Head and across the water in the Wirral.



Notting Hill Carnival, London – 28 – 29th August



The world famous Notting Hill Carnival is always worth a visit. The vibrant mixture of colours and cultures is a sight to behold, with this year`s theme being Unity and Diversity. Children`s day is on Sunday 28th.



Brunel`s ss Great Britain: Victorian August Bank Holiday – 27th – 29th August



The ss Great Britain turns back the clock to the Victorian era this August Bank Holiday. Bristol favourites, the Harry Brown Shanty Men, will entertain with traditional sea shanties, shire horses will be giving rides and the old railway wagons will be on site.



World Bog Snorkelling Championship, Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys, Wales – 29th August



Llanwrtyd Wells – the smallest town in Britain – plays host to this intriguing annual sporting event in which competitors have to complete two lengths of a 60-yard trench in the Waen Rhydd Peat bog.



Spirit of Speyside Walking Festival, Scotland – 25th – 29th August



From sandy beaches and winding rivers, to moors and hills, there is something for everyone to enjoy along a series of guided walks in Moray and Speyside.



Jousting at Hedingham Castle, Castle Hedingham, Essex – 28th – 29th August



The final joust of the season sees medieval chivalry revisited with the Royal Knights of England taking centre stage. You may also try your hand at archery and enjoy a hog roast at one of England`s finest Norman castles.



The FunQuay Beach Weekend, West India Quay, London – 27th – 28th August



Head down to London`s Docklands for the FunQuay Beach Weekend. Twenty tonnes of sand will be on hand to create London`s only beach, where you can enjoy street entertainment, music and free entry to Museum in Docklands throughout the weekend.



Bank Holiday Events at the Ironbridge Gorge Museums, Shropshire – 26th – 29th August



For a day of family fun, visit one of the 10 museums in the spectacular Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire. From candle dipping and peg-making, to ceramic workshops and eco-creativity sessions, there will be a wealth of different things to do.



The Festival of Fiery Foods, Brighton Marina 28th – 29th August



The Fiery Food Festival at Brighton Marina on 28th and 29th August offers a spicy appetiser to the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival 2005 which runs throughout September providing a month of fun, fulsome and frankly delicious events.



International Kite Festival, Southsea Common, Portsmouth – 27th-29th August



A festival of all things kite-related. Run by the Kite Society of Great Britain, there will be numerous displays for your viewing pleasure with many participants from overseas.
