A recent survey of more than 6,000 UK holidaymakers has shown that more than 70% would like to see overweight passengers charged more if they impose on somebody else’s space.
TravelSpec has revealed that more than 70% of British holidaymakers believe that overweight passengers should be made to pay for extra seats on flights.
With obesity in the UK on the rise and restrictions on luggage allowances becoming tighter, a survey showed that 75% of men and 68% of women believe passengers who overspill into their neighbours area should be forced to pay for both seats.
Men prove to be more damning than women, with only 25% of male travellers conceding that obesity is embarrassing enough without having to pay for the privilege, compared to 32% of women.
The findings from a recent OnePoll.com survey commissioned by TravelSpec.com a flight comparison site that supplies cheap flights to Miami, flights to London, flights to Chicago and cheap flights to Paris reveal that a lack of space on flights is the greatest cause of contention for UK travellers. When asked what they dislike most about flying, 32% of respondents stated a lack of leg room and mobility.
The research further revealed that crying babies and restless passengers were also aggravating for UK travellers. When it comes to those they would least like to sit next to on a flight, a resounding 67% of respondents cited people with body odour.
However, despite their reported discomfort while flying, only 13% of respondents said they would pay to upgrade to first class. Not surprising given that more than 70% of people are currently spending less than £500 per person on a weeks holiday.
Commenting on the survey results, TravelSpec.coms managing director, Rafi Neumann said: At a time when people are less financially secure and holidays have become very precious, British travellers look forward to a relaxing experience. The majority of passengers dont have the budget to upgrade to business or first class seats and consequently have to forego comfort on flights, often resulting in a stressful start and end to their holiday. If overweight people are thrown into the mix, you can see why travellers feel that they should pay for the extra space they take up.
