The Civil Aviation Authority has launched a new public information leaflet, which highlights the financial security provided by ATOL (Air Travel Organisers` Licensing) and other consumer benefits of booking holiday packages with tour operators.

The new leaflet recognises that some holidaymakers are now making their own packages by booking flights and accommodation separately, or by using links on airline websites to add other holiday components. The leaflet explains that do-it-yourself holidays often have no consumer protection if suppliers like airlines or car hire firms collapse or cannot provide the booked service. In contrast, tour operators selling packages have to comply with standards on consumer rights laid down by European law.

David Moesli, Deputy Director of the Consumer Protection Group at the CAA, said: Our new leaflet highlights financial protection through ATOL, and also the other consumer benefits in booking a holiday package with a single tour operator.

Many holidaymakers are now buying separate holiday items through the Internet, but some don`t realise that they won`t have the same protection as they would get from a tour operator`s package. The leaflet is designed to help consumers to make an informed choice before they book.

The leaflet is being distributed through ATOL tour operators and travel agents.
