The Convention Industry Council’s (CIC) Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) certification is one of the most respected and honored designations in the meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry. Launched in 1985 to enhance the knowledge and performance of meeting professionals, the CMP Program promotes the status and credibility of the meeting profession and advances uniform standards of practice. Today there area nearly 10,000 CMP’s in 26 countries world-wide.

In a conscious effort to promote the importance of the CMP as the global designation of meetings industry professionals, CIC has committed to holding at least one testing location per year outside North America.

The CIC is proud to announce that on 11 May 2004 sixteen meeting professionals passed the stringent CMP examination held in Frankfurt, Germany and in Singapore. Congratulations are extended to the new CMP’s from Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Singapore: Karin Amor (Italy), Maria Arnolda Egberts (Italy), Lin Ing Lee(Singapore), Cheng Khuan Loh (Singapore), Pier Paolo Mariotti (Italy), Bruna Migliazza (Italy), Elizabeth Nitschke-Van Calcar (Germany), James Papineau (Singapore), Alan Pini (Italy), Lynn Quah (Singapore), Eric Rozenberg (Belgium), Ginevra Rugani (Italy), Barbara Schwaiger (Austria), Sor Mui Caron Soh (Singapore), Alexandra Stross, (Austria), Wai Peng Jocely Wun (Singapore).

New CMP’s are proud of their accomplishment and dedicated to promoting the program. “As we work towards more professionalism in Europe, it`s important to develop the concept of certification,” says Eric Rozenberg, CMP, managing director at Ince & Tive in Belgium. “The CMP process is an excellent tool to align the basic knowledge one should have about the meetings industry.

The concept of promoting the CMP as a worldwide designation and developing a global examination was initiated by CIC’s European partners. The ability of a meeting professional to understand the expectations and needs of their attendees as well as their industry colleagues regardless of their location in the world is of utmost importance in today’s global economy.

The CMP program aims to increase the professionalism of meeting management professionals in all sectors of the industry around the world by:

  • identifying a body of knowledge in the meeting management profession;

  • establishing the level of knowledge and performance required for certification;

  • increasing the value of practitioners to their employers and their customers;

  • recognizing and raising industry standards, practices and ethics;

  • maximizing the value received from the products and services provided by CMP’s.

Pier Paolo Mariotti, CMP, coordinator for the Eurac Convention Center in Italy agrees that the CMP certification raises industry standards. “Going through the whole process of the CMP certification in all its aspects was a rewarding experience,” Mariotti says. “It was a great occasion for members to get to know each other and collaborate on a common issue: identifying a body of knowledge internationally recognized for the Italian meeting industry and planting the seeds of recognition of the professionals in the Italian economy and politics.”
