VisitBritain welcomed the latest inbound tourism figures, which showed yet another substantial growth of 11 per cent over May to July compared with the same period last year.

The results for May to July 2004 continue the trend of being the “best ever” recorded three-month period in terms of the number of visits.

During the three-month period from May to July 2004, strong growth has been recorded from all three world areas. The strongest growth comes from countries outside of Western Europe and North America, up by 17 per cent. Visitors from North America grew by 13 per cent and Western Europe by 9 per cent.

So far, 2004 has been a bumper year for international visitors. The first seven months of the year has shown a 13 per cent growth compared to last year, and is again the best ever January – July period in terms of the number of visits.

Visits to Britain are 6 per cent up from the January to July period in 2000 (before September 11). Visits by North American visitors remain down 11 per cent when compared with the first seven months of 2000. However, visits by tourists from Western Europe are up by 12 per cent (compared with the first seven months of 2000).

Tom Wright, VisitBritain Chief Executive, said:

“The latest statistics on inbound international tourists are a positive result and yet further proof of a recovery from the challenges that British tourism has faced over the last three years.

“With visits from all regions increasing and positive evidence from VisitBritain’s overseas markets, we are increasingly confident that 2004 will see Britain’s tourism recovery continue to make great strides.

“These figures have been boosted by the extensive VisitBritain-led marketing campaigns and customer communications strategy throughout North America, Europe and other key markets.

“Emerging world markets for tourism, such as Russia, China and Poland offer British tourism further opportunities for growth.

“VisitBritain is developing strategies to encourage visitors from these emerging markets.”
