Copenhagen gets a major new city centre congress venue in 2010

Within less than three years Copenhagen will welcome guests to a new, Danish-designed congress centre close the city centre. The congress centre will have a maximum capacity of 4,000 people, and its largest conference room will have space for up to 2,300 people. Above the congress centre itself, there will be a hotel complex offering 1,300 rooms in different categories.

The family owned Danish hotel chain, Arp-Hansen Hotel Group, is behind the new 75,000 m2 congress and hotel complex, which will be located within walking distance of Copenhagen’s Central Station. As well as the 1,300 hotel rooms in the complex itself, its central location means that over 3,000 other city centre hotel rooms will be within easy walking distance.

The centre, which will be Copenhagen’s second major congress venue, will be named Copenhagen Downtown Congress Centre.

CEO of Wonderful Copenhagen, Lars Bernhard Jørgensen, comments: "We are delighted to welcome the new congress centre in Copenhagen. It is certainly going to be a great supplement to the existing centre, the Bella Center, which is the largest congress centre in the Nordic countries, with a maximum capacity of 20,000 people."

Copenhagen Downtown Congress Centre is set to open in the second half of 2010, but the first of its three on-sight hotels will already be up and running by late 2009. The other two hotels will open in the following years.

Copenhagen currently offers more than 13,000 hotel rooms. Approximately another 3,000 rooms are already confirmed for the coming years and, with the additional 1,300 rooms in this new complex, the city’s total capacity will reach 17,000 rooms giving yet more reasons to choose Copenhagen as a host city.

The Arp-Hansen Hotel Group currently owns 1,700 rooms in Copenhagen divided over nine hotel properties. With the new complex the group will underline its position as the city’s largest player on the hotel market.

CEO of the Arp-Hansen Hotel Group, Dorte Krak, comments: "We really believe in Copenhagen and think that the city has plenty to offer as a convention destination. Therefore, we are expecting a great deal from this new project. We have hired the Danish architect Kim Utzon to design the congress and hotel complex and we are confident that he will present a solution of the highest standard. We have already worked with him on our latest hotel, The Copenhagen Island, which is located directly across from the site of this new complex. Copenhagen Island offers 326 rooms and, because of its location, it will be convenient to enhance the 1,300 room capacity of the convention centre, which will be useful when hosting larger arrangements."

In the last ten years Copenhagen has been in the top of both the UIA and the ICCA list, when it comes to the number of international congresses hosted. In the same period the city has expanded its number of hotel and meeting facilities extensively.
