Delta<.> Air Lines and Alitalia<.> announced last Monday the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Rome, Italy, to enter exclusive talks on cooperation in marketing and other services.

Delta is pleased to enter into this significant new relationship with Italy`s largest and one of the world`s greatest airlines. Through this expanded level of cooperation with Alitalia, we are continuing to build on our leadership position in the global airline services marketplace, said Leo F. Mullin, Delta`s chairman and chief executive officer.

These discussions are the first step to Alitalia`s possible SkyTeam membership. Air France, a founding member of SkyTeam, also signed a MOU with Alitalia today to discuss a marketing alliance.

Delta and Alitalia initially plan to work toward cooperation in the following areas: coordination of schedules to facilitate connections between the two carriers; compatibility of information technology systems; exploration of cargo opportunities; sharing of facilities and passenger handling in jointly served cities; and mutual participation in frequent flyer programs. The carriers are also exploring opportunities for codesharing on each other`s transatlantic service and on service beyond their hubs.

Delta`s goal is to become the No. 1 airline in the eyes of its customers, flying passengers and cargo from anywhere to everywhere. People choose to fly Delta more often than any other airline in the world on 5,280 flights each day to 376 cities in 64 countries on Delta, Delta Express, Delta Shuttle, Delta Connection carriers and Delta`s Worldwide Partners. Delta is a founding member of SkyTeam, a global airline alliance that gives customers with extensive worldwide destinations, flights and services. In addition to safely and securely making reservations and purchasing tickets at delta.com, Delta customers can select seats, get up-to-date flight information, make accommodations reservations, upgrade, and more. U.S.-based travel agencies also can access Delta Web fares for their customers via delta.com`s Online Agency Service Center.
