FYROM: Milososki suggests opening of new border crossing to Greek counterpart

Foreign Affairs Minister Antonio Milososki has sent a letter to his Greek counterpart Dora Bakoyannis to suggest the opening of a new border crossing Markova Noga – German in an attempt to advance bilateral contacts and develop the cross border cooperation between FYROM and Greece. Minister Milososki has sent a letter to his Greek counterpart Dora Bakoyannis to suggest the opening of a new border crossing Markova Noga – German in an attempt to advance bilateral contacts and develop the cross border cooperation between FYROM and Greece.

"Starting with the commitment of my country to build good relations and to develop comprehensive cooperation with your country, as our neighbour and EU and NATO member state, I am confident that the said border crossing would contribute to great communication between the citizens of the Republic of Macedonia and the Hellenic Republic in this area, says Milososki elaborating the benefit from the implementation of this "often mentioned initiative".

He adds that "the opening of the border crossing would be a significant step towards accomplishment of the declared commitments to good-neighborliness, which on its part would give an impetus to the development and cooperation in the area of tourism between the two countries and would help intensify the trilateral cooperation and traffic between FYR Macedonia, Greece and Albania within the Prespa Euro-Region".

"Taking into consideration that the cooperation between the Republic of Macedonia and the Hellenic Republic in the area of border management and cross-border cooperation is based on the Interim Accord of 13 September 1995, under which both countries have obliged themselves to endeavor to improve and modernize the existing border crossings as required by the flow of traffic and construct new border crossings as necessary, then the Memorandum on Practical Measures Related to the Interim Accord, signed in 1995 in Skopje and the Protocol on Border Cooperation signed in 1998 in Athens based on which a Permanent Mixed Border Committee was established, there are pre-conditions for the implementation of this initiative for the benefit of the two countries", says FM Milososki.

Regarding the said border crossing, Milososki stresses, the Republic of Macedonia has ensured all required permits from relevant bodies, as well as the needed funds and after talking with the Mayors of the Municipalities of Resen and Prespes, they showed great interest in the opening of this border crossing.

Furthermore, he proposes a working meeting to be organised between delegations of both ministries by the end of May, where the Macedonian officials would present the schedule of activities for opening the border crossing by the end of November 2009.

I am confident of the further development of the cooperation between the Republic of Macedonia and the Hellenic Republic and I hope that you share the opinion on the need for opening another border crossing, as a small but important step in the process of building good-neighbourly relations, concludes Milososki, saying he looks forward to Bakoyannis’ prompt reply.
