Lufthansa: Passengers can use broadband internet above the clouds with the LIFEBOOK

On the 15 January 2003 Lufthansa will be celebrating a world first by launching the first Boeing 747-400 with broadband Internet on board

On the 15 January 2003 Lufthansa will be celebrating a world first by launching the first Boeing 747-400 with broadband Internet on board. Passengers will be able to access the Internet for the first time above the clouds with state-of-the-art notebook technology from Fujisu Siemens Computers.

For the initial three month trial of FlyNet on flights between Frankfurt and Washington DC, the airline will be giving out 50 LIFEBOOK S6010 on loan to its passengers. The LIFEBOOK is small and light with a powerful Mobile Intel Pentium III Processor -M making it ideal for mobile communications. It also has a brilliant 13.3 TFT-XGA display, a battery life span of up to six hours and integrated wireless LAN allowing easy access to the high-speed satellite Internet on board. Lufthansa is also planning to make broadband Internet available in all departure lounges worldwide in the near future.

This high-end notebook is perfect for the mobile office on board our planes, creating ideal working conditions which is why we decided to work together with Fujitsu Siemens Computers, explains Lufthansa-FlyNet-Manager Dr. Burkard Wigger. To avoid any security concerns, all information stored on the notebooks will automatically be deleted when the computer is rebooted. Additionally, each LIFEBOOK will have its battery refreshed on landing and especially trained service professionals will be available during the trial run for technical issues. It will also be possible to purchase the notebook directly from Lufthansa via the Miles & More Skyshop cataloge.

The FlyNet service takes mobility to new heights and Fujitsu Siemens Computers is thrilled to be involved with such an ground-breaking initiative illustrating our corporate vision to provide true mobility to customers wherever they are, says Peter Esser, Executive Vice President Volume Product, Fujitsu Siemens Computers. We’re delighted that Lufthansa’s passengers will be using our notebooks for their work above the clouds.
