Both Meeting Planners and Venues called for ‘mutual understanding’ of each others businesses, in a recent MPI UK Chapter educational seminar. The seminar, facilitated by Ann Holmes CMM, was one of the first to approach the relationship between planners and venues.

Part of the chapter’s Platinum Series programme, the seminar“What Planners & Venues Would Really Like to Say to Each Other” was attended by both planners and venues. The session involved lively debate and valuable insight on how the two sectors could work together better.

The discussion questioned what each party wanted from the other, in terms of the overall relationship and specifically the initial site visit. Holmes then guided the meeting through what was essential in contracts and the tricky subject of what irritated each party about the other. This was followed by a debate on how they can work more effectively together.

The meeting agreed that more understanding was needed on the operations of each side of the relationship, as well as clearer, transparent communication. “Planners and venues both have an over-riding goal – client and end user satisfaction,” commented Holmes. “This can only be achieved through open and honest communication, which is based on a clear understanding of the others operating environment.”

The seminar also approached the need for clarification on how the event return on investment (ROI) could be evaluated. Comments Anne Holmes CMM, “ROI is about understanding what criteria constitutes success, establishing the metrics which can assess it, and then working towards it from the outset.”
