Thursday morning at about 6 o’ clock a passenger refused to submit to a security check in Pier A at Brussels Airport and subsequently disappeared among the other passengers. This created a security risk to the passengers. For this reason it was decided to evacuate the whole of Pier A, including the aircraft that were docked at the pier at that time.

After the entire pier and the aircraft were submitted to a thorough security check, the pier was put back into use at about 10.00 a.m. All passengers to Schengen destinations had to undergo a new security check before being allowed into this pier to board their plane.

By applying this procedure the airport and the authorities guaranteed the maximum security of the passengers.

Because of this incident several flights were seriously delayed or had to be cancelled, the impact of which was felt well into the afternoon. In total 80 flights were affected by this incident, 24 of which had to be cancelled. Pier A, which has 31 gates, is used for intra-European Schengen traffic. Operations in pier B proceeded normally throughout the day.
