Stansted unveils central search improvements in time for the bank holiday getaway

Stansted Airport has unveiled improvements to its Security Search area in time for the busy bank holiday getaway later this week, that have been designed to assist passengers through the process whilst maintaining the highest of security standards.

The airport`s Security Search is the largest of any European airport and the improvements will enable Stansted to clear up to 4,500 passengers per hour at peak times.

Security Service Delivery Manager for BAA Stansted, Dave Jeffcott said: Our passengers expect an efficient service from us and the improvements made will maintain high security standards but enable us to process passengers in a much more customer focussed way.

As part of a `waste the waste` initiative we carefully examined and identified elements of procedures that were not as productive as they could be; for example, now if we need to search bags we will move them away from the x-ray machine area in order to reduce congestion and keep the screening process flowing.

People travelling through Stansted will now experience a faster flowing Central Search, earlier engagement with security staff and reduced queuing times that will improve their overall flying experience.

Some of the improvements implemented at Stansted include:

  • Enlarged search area housing 14 x-ray machines
  • Machines fitted with extended roller-beds so hand luggage can be prepared for screening in advance of reaching machines
  • Body searches and bag searches to be conducted away from x-ray machines to avoid congestion
  • New uniforms for supervisors so they are identified more easily
  • Central Search area will open from 04:00 (presently 05:00) to cater for increasing volumes of passengers on early morning flights

Speaking in advance of the bank holiday getaway Dave Jeffcott added: The summer months, and in particular the August Bank Holiday, are extremely busy periods for us as tens of thousands of people take advantage of the growing route network at Stansted.

With nearly 150 destinations on offer from over 40 airlines across the busy summer season, we are gearing ourselves to welcome nearly 300,000 passengers over the bank holiday weekend – traditionally our busiest weekend of the year.

Air travel continues to grow in popularity and this is reflected at Stansted as we now offer more routes to more countries than ever before. Security screening is a process of extreme importance in the movement of passengers through the terminal. The changes implemented will mean passengers are screened in strict accordance with regulations but will be clear of the area in the most efficient way.
